Vieux Nice, France Photo Diary

I am seriously in love with Nice, France. Our five days in Nice this past August was not enough, so we’ve decided to plan another visit to the same place and almost same time! Prior to planning our vacation time, we knew we wanted to visit France, but also desired a beach getaway. Voila, the Côte d’Azur, French Riviera, was the vacances parfaites! Culture, history, amazing food and the most fabulous beaches are non negotiable here. Vieux Nice (Old Nice) is a very short walk from the famous Promenade de Anglais (the approximate 7 kilometer walkway along the Mediterranean Sea). Step off the Promenade and you’ll find yourself walking through the narrow cobblestone streets lined with colorful buildings full of history and character.

While strolling though Vieux Nice you’re surrounded by cafes, shops, and the Cours Saleya Market which creates a classic French vibe. There is much Italian influence in Nice, as it was once part of Italy, making it more spectacular. The history of Nice is fascinating! Check out Best of Nice Blog www.bestofniceblog.com for an informative read and lots of great info!

There is nothing better than starting the day by walking to the Cours Saleya Market to browse and shop for veggies, fruits, cheeses, olives, meats and breads. This open air market was our favorite market we visited while in the Côte d’Azur. Of course, no French day is complete without people watching while enjoying a croissant and cafe au lait at one of the many sidewalk cafes. The evenings, in our apartment on the Promenade, we made the most delicious, simple and fresh dinners with our market goods!

While in Nice, trying Socca, a crispy, delicious pancake made from chickpeas, is a must! Waiting in line at Chez Theresa for this famous regional delight was a bit trying in the heat, but well worth the wait. Each time the chef wheeled the cart over with his fresh Socca we just prayed it would be enough for the people in front of us so we could move up in line. Mais non! We drooled as three rounds showed up! By the time we received our order we were beyond ready to head to the beach and cool off in the blue, crystal clear Mediterranean water.

What is a vacation to France without flowers? So many choices of flowers, plants, herbs, soaps, art and perfect gift items are available at the Cours Saleya Market. Lavender, native to the south of France, is a treasure in its many forms. On Mondays, the market transforms  into an antique market. We missed this but will be there next summer! I cannot wait to have more time to explore and enjoy Vieux Nice!
