What to Wear in the French Riviera

Leading up to our French Riviera vacation last summer, I was a bit hyper focused on what to bring and wear there. So online I went, searching “what to wear” in the Riviera. I had some pieces that would naturally fit. But, most of my summer wardrobe just didn’t seem sophisticated enough for this glamorous area.

French Riviera dress code search results included flowy, long dresses, linens, stripes, neutrals and nothing black. I had major gaps to fill in. Primarily, replacing my multiple favorite black summer dresses and my favorite dresses that may have been too colorful. These outfits fit perfect in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Florida and California, but didn’t quite seem to fit in with the subtle elegance and the romantic feel described by French Riviera internet searches. I definitely wanted to fit in, so striped dresses replaced my black dresses and a bunch of flowy dresses replaced my colorful dresses.

When we arrived in the Riviera, I had a suitcase full of clothes that never unfolded. I do not enjoy wearing billowy dresses and stripes (both overwhelm me), yet I purchased them. I regretted not bringing my favorite dresses in black and color! People were dressed in lots of color and lots of black, and I did not see many flowy dresses. Slip dresses, simple sun dresses, short dresses and midi skirts, yes. Of course, in warm weather places, wearing linen and light colors, is practical to keep cool. I had a mix of dresses, skirts and tops made of linen, viscose and rayon fabrics.

As I was thinking about our upcoming trip back to Nice, France, and scrolling through pics, I thought I’d create a post with what people (women and men) were  really wearing out on the towns. Of course, just like anywhere, there are places that require more formal attire, but for travelers and visitors living and experiencing this beautiful place, wear your style to stay cool! Returning this summer, I feel relief knowing what I’ll be packing!

Whites and Neutrals

The French Riviera is a subtropical climate region on the Mediterranean Sea. The lighter clothes in the hot sun will always keep you cooler.

Shades of Blue

Blue skies and blue waters call for dressing the part in pale, bright or dark blues!

Pops of Color

When in the Riviera, you’re surrounded by beautiful colorful flowers, architecture and art! If you love color, whether bright or pale, wear it and live it!

Florals and Patterns

Flowers bring joy and beauty. Wear them and be joyful!

Black

This is where the internet mislead me! I forever love black, and there are so many black pieces that are perfect and hot weather appropriate! Day to night black, switch up accessories, and forever summer chic!

Quintessential French Riviera

This is pure glamour and completely achievable for chic dinner plans!

Wear what you love! If you’re not sure what exactly to bring, just plan on shopping at your vacation destination, especially in France! My husband, Jordan, had brought a variety of light colored, light weight cotton blend shirts (and he is used to hot weather). Throughout our vacation, he purchased a variety of linen button down shirts and felt major relief from the heat. Women have choices of wearing sleeveless, less restricting clothes such as dresses and skirts. For men, I would suggest investing in light weight linen shirts that create comfort and riviera vibe. I packed four swim suits and used all of them!  Swimwear is light and easy to pack. If you plan on a lot of beach time, it’s worth having extra swimwear!

These pictures are taken in Nice, Menton, Eze and Antibes, France.

À bientôt!

I'd love to hear from you!
